Teeth Cleanings and Exams

At Desert Creek Dental, we believe a healthy smile is a beautiful smile. We are a patient-focused dental office that prioritizes preventive dental care so that you can enjoy lifelong oral health.

Routine Dental Exams in Queen Creek

Dental exams allow us to check your teeth, gums, tongue, jaws, and other oral structures for any irregularities, such as decay, disease, or infection. During exams, we take digital x-rays and screen for oral cancer.

We agree with the American Dental Association’s recommendation of visiting the dentist every six months. However, patients with specific concerns or underlying health conditions may need more frequent dental check-ups.

Dental Cleanings Prevent Decay and Disease

Perhaps the best way to ensure your teeth and gums stay healthy and functional is to get regular teeth cleanings and exams. Of course, brushing and flossing at home is essential, but our dental hygienists can clean the nooks and crannies of your mouth you can’t reach on your own. We use specialized instruments to thoroughly remove plaque and tartar (calculus), reducing your risk of developing cavities and gum disease.

The three main types of teeth cleanings are prophylaxis cleaning, scaling and root planing, and gross debridement.

#1 Prophylaxis Cleaning

A prophylaxis cleaning is a routine maintenance cleaning during which the hygienist removes plaque, calculus, and surface stains from the teeth. We usually recommend these cleanings every six months.

#2 Scaling and Root Planing

Also referred to as “deep cleaning,” scaling and root planing is for patients with existing gum disease or those with a high risk of developing gum disease. The hygienist cleans the teeth and below the gumline, removing all signs of plaque, calculus, and bacteria.

#3 Gross Debridement

A gross debridement thoroughly removes all tartar buildup on the teeth and gums. This type of cleaning is ideal for patients who haven’t visited the dentist in over a year or longer.

The frequency of preventive dental exams and cleanings depend on your health history, the condition of your teeth and gums, any underlying conditions, and many other factors.
