Wisdom tooth extraction can be daunting. Knowing what and when to eat after the procedure is key to a smooth recovery. We’re here today to explain why wisdom teeth require extraction and post-procedure dietary tips.
Wisdom teeth, or third molars, typically emerge in the late teens or early 20s. These teeth most commonly require extraction because they’ve become impacted, meaning they don’t have enough room to grow normally. This can cause severe pain, infection, or damage to adjacent teeth. Wisdom teeth can also require extraction if they emerge at odd angles and risk overcrowding or misalignment of other teeth.
Following wisdom teeth removal, it’s essential to choose foods that are gentle on the extraction site to avoid complications and promote healing. Here are some recommended options:
Avoid foods that are hard, crunchy, or sticky. These can irritate the extraction site and hinder healing. It’s also wise to steer clear of hot foods and beverages initially, as they can cause swelling and discomfort.
Immediately following the extraction, it’s best to stick to liquids and very soft foods. In the first 24 hours, prioritize water and avoid alcohol, caffeine, and carbonated drinks. As the initial swelling subsides, you can gradually introduce more (still soft) foods into your diet before moving on to semi-solid foods like mashed potatoes and scrambled eggs within a few days.
By the end of the first week, most patients can reintroduce more solid foods. Full recovery and a return to a normal diet usually take about two weeks, but this can vary based on individual healing processes.
